Syracuse can snap two-game slide vs. No. 19 Notre Dame

Jan 30, 2007 - 3:26 PM No. 19 Notre Dame (17-4) at Syracuse (15-6) 7:00 pm EST

SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- With one career milestone in the books, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim gets his third chance to set another.

Boeheim can pass former Temple coach John Chaney for 13th place in Division I victories Tuesday when Syracuse hosts No. 19 Notre Dame in a Big East Conference matchup, their lone meeting of the season.

In his 31st season at his alma mater, Boeheim became the 22nd individual - and seventh at the same school - to coach 1,000 games Saturday in a 76-71 loss to Louisville. The Hall of Famer is 741-259 and tied with Bob Knight and Lute Olsen with 28 20-win seasons, two shy of Dean Smith's mark.

However, the Orange (15-6, 4-3 Big East) have lost their last two outings after a four-game winning streak and are 4-3 in conference play. Eric Devendorf scored 18 points off the bench, Terrence Roberts added 16 and Demetris Nichols 15 against the Cardinals.

The Fighting Irish (17-4, 5-3) won 15 of their first 17 games for their best start since 1978-1979. Since then, they have split their last four outings and are 5-3 in the Big East.

Notre Dame extended their home winning streak to 17 consecutive games with Saturday's 66-63 triumph over Villanova. Colin Falls scored 23 points and Russell Carter added 14.

Syracuse has won 13 of the past 15 meetings against Notre Dame, which has dropped all three road games in conference play this season. The Orange posted an 88-82 win over the Fighting Irish on January 11, 2006.
