Hansbrough closes in on 1,000 points for North Carolina

Jan 31, 2007 - 4:42 PM Miami FL (9-12) at No. 3 North Carolina (19-2) 7:00 pm EST

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- In less than two seasons, Tyler Hansbrough has made a significant impact on North Carolina's record book.

Hansbrough has a chance to reach 1,000 career points when the third-ranked Tar Heels shoot for their fifth straight win Wednesday against Miami in an Atlantic Coast Conference meeting.

Last season's ACC Rookie of the Year, Hansbrough averages 18.2 points and is 30 shy of becoming the sixth-fastest Tar Heel to score 1,000. The 6-9 sophomore forward is playing his 53rd game, one more than Charlie Scott in 1968-1969.

The Tar Heels (19-2, 5-1 ACC) have won 16 of their last 17 games and can record their 20th victory for the 34th time in the last 37 seasons.

North Carolina is coming off Saturday's 92-64 victory over Arizona. Ty Lawson scored 18 points, Reyshawn Terry added 15 and Hansbrough, Deon Thompson and Wayne Ellington 14 each for the Tar Heels.

The Hurricanes (9-12, 2-5) showed some promise by opening the campaign with seven wins in their first 11 games. Since then, they have dropped eight of 10, including their last four.

Miami is looking to rebound after a 92-85 loss to Virginia Tech on January 23. Denis Clemente scored 24 points on 8-of-17 shots, Jack McClinton added 18 and Raymond Hicks 16 for the Hurricanes.

North Carolina has won five of the six home encounters against Miami and nine of 11 meetings overall. The Hurricanes posted an 81-70 triumph here January 14, 2006.
