Surging Texas A&M looks to slow down Durant, Texas

Feb 5, 2007 - 7:43 PM No. 25 Texas (16-6) at No. 7 Texas A&M (19-3) 9:00 pm EST

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Ticker) -- After finally defeating one of the most-storied programs in college basketball, Texas A&M will take on one of its most promising young players.

Coming off an emotional win over Kansas, the seventh-ranked Aggies will take on Kevin Durant and No. 25 Texas in clash of intra-state rivals on Monday.

Texas A&M (19-3, 7-1 Big 12) upset No. 6 Kansas, 69-66, in a showdown for the top spot in the Big 12 on Saturday. Despite trailing by 10 points with less than seven minutes remaining, Acie Law IV sparked a big second-half comeback and finished with 23 points for the Aggies.

A senior guard, Law hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 23 seconds to play and added a pair of free throws with 5.2 ticks left to give Texas A&M its first win over Kansas in 12 meetings and sole possession of the top spot in the Big 12.

However, after the huge win, it won't get any easier for the Aggies, who now will face the star Durant and the Longhorns.

One of the top freshman in the nation, Durant has been outstanding in conference play, leading the league in a number of categories including scoring (33.1 ppg), field-goal percentage (54.4 percent) and rebounding (13.8 rpg).

Texas (16-6, 6-2) did have a three-game winning streak snapped despite Durant's stellar play, absorbing a 73-72 to Kansas State on Saturday. The freshman sensation scored 32 points on 13-of-21 shooting, his third consecutive 30-plus point effort.

With the loss, the Longhorns also lost their share of the Big 12 lead.

Texas won two of the three meetings between the teams last season, including a 74-70 victory in the Big 12 Tournament semifinals.
