No. 12 Marquette looks for ninth straight win

Feb 10, 2007 - 3:28 PM No. 12 Marquette (21-4) at No. 23 Georgetown (17-5) 12:00 pm EST

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Thanks to the longest winning streak of any team in the Big East Conference this season, Marquette is closing in on the top spot.

The 12th-ranked Golden Eagles look for their ninth consecutive victory overall and sixth in seven road contests Saturday when they visit No. 23 Georgetown, which has won six straight.

Unbeaten since losing to Providence and Syracuse in early January, Marquette (21-4, 8-2 Big East), Marquette is 19-1 when leading at the half. The Golden Eagles trail first-place Pittsburgh by one game in the conference.

Marquette used a balanced scoring attack in a 67-47 triumph over Rutgers on Wednesday. Ousmane Barro scored 11 points and 11 rebounds and four other players had 10 points apiece for the Golden Eagles.

The Hoyas (17-5, 7-2) have not lost since January 13 against Pittsburgh and have beaten their last six opponents by at least eight points. They allow an average of 56.2 points and are in third place in the conference standings, 1 1/2 games behind the Panthers.

Georgetown is coming off Wednesday's 73-65 victory over Louisville. Roy Hibbert scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jeff Green added 16 points for the Hoyas, who limited the Cardinals to 33 percent (20-of-60) shooting.

The teams have split their four all-time encounters. Georgetown took the last meeting, 62-59, in last season's Big East Tournament.
