No. 14 Washington St. seeks sweep of California

Feb 10, 2007 - 4:03 PM California (12-11) at No. 14 Washington St (20-4) 5:00 pm EST

PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) -- Washington State is proving you do not always need to score a lot of points to win.

The 14th-ranked Cougars look to creep closer to first place in the Pac-10 Conference when they host California on Saturday.

Washington State posted a 73-56 victory over California on January 20. However, the Cougars have dropped five of the last six meetings here.

Washington State (20-4, 9-3 Pac-10) has its first 20-win campaign since 1993-1994 and can move within one-half game of first-place UCLA in the Pac-10 race. The Bruins meet West Virginia in a non-conference battle on Saturday.

After scoring just 48 points last Saturday against Arizona State, the Cougars raised their home record to 11-1 this season with Thursday's 58-45 triumph over Stanford.

Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver scored 12 points apiece and Ivory Clark added 11 with 10 rebounds for Washington State, which limited the Cardinal to just 28 percent (15-of-53) shooting from the floor.

The Golden Bears (12-11, 4-7) opened the campaign with six wins in seven games before struggling in conference play. They have dropped their last five games and are ahead of Oregon State and Arizona State, who are a combined 1-23 in the Pac 10.

California is coming off Thursday's 79-71 defeat against Washington. Ayinde Ubaka scored 20 points and Ryan Anderson added 17 for the Golden Bears.
