Cincinnati knocks off Rutgers 65-58
Jan 3, 2010 - 3:23 AM PISCATAWAY, N.J.(AP) -- Deonta Vaughn had 17 points and Yancy Gates scored 10 to lift Cincinnati to a 65-58 victory over Rutgers on Saturday night.Fresh off its 71-69 upset of No. 10 Connecticut last Wednesday, Cincinnati spoiled Rutgers' Big East opener.
The Bearcats (10-3, 2-0) survived 3-for-16 shooting from beyond the arc by dominating inside, holding a 30-20 scoring advantage in the paint and outrebounding Rutgers 40-28.
Rashad Bishop made all three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc to snap a 51-51 tie with 5:44 remaining, and Cincinnati never relinquished its lead.
Cincinnati's Lance Stephenson scored 10 points.
Jonathan Mitchell scored 14 points and added seven rebounds for Rutgers (9-4, 0-1), which couldn't survive an off-night from leading scorer Mike Rosario. He missed eight of his first nine shots and scored 12 points on 4 of 19 shooting.
