Gonzaga faces tough test as No. 9 Memphis comes to town

Feb 17, 2007 - 4:36 PM No. 9 Memphis (22-3) at Gonzaga (18-9) 6:00 pm EST

SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) - Gonzaga will try to get back on track Saturday against a tough opponent in the ninth-ranked Memphis Tigers.

Gonzaga (18-9, 8-3 WCC) fell to Santa Clara, 84-73, its last time out, snapping a 50 game home winning streak for the Zags and dropping them into an unfamiliar second place in the West Coast Conference.

The Zags have dominated the West Coast Conference the past few years under coach Mark Few but have fallen on hard times recently, losing second-leading scorer Josh Heytvelt to suspension after his arrest on drug charges last weekend.

Memphis (22-3, 12-0 Conference USA), on the other hand, comes into the game on fire, having won their last 14 games and dominating a weak Conference USA.

The Tigers took care of Tulsa last time out, 69-52, behind 20 points from sophomore guard Chris Douglas-Roberts.

A loss to Memphis at this point could force Gonzaga to win the WCC tournament to get into the NCAA tournament.

Memphis and Gonzaga met early in the season last year with the Tigers claiming an 83-72 victory in Memphis.
