UCLA rallies for 77-73 victory over Stanford
Feb 5, 2010 - 5:51 AM By BETH HARRIS AP Sports WriterLOS ANGELES(AP) -- Reeves Nelson scored 18 points and Malcolm Lee hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to preserve UCLA's 77-73 victory over Stanford on Thursday night that kept the Cardinal winless on the road this season.
Michael Roll added 16 points, Nikola Dragovic 15 and Tyler Honeycutt 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Bruins (11-11, 6-4 Pac-10), who have won four of their last five.
League-leading scorer Landry Fields had a career-high 35 points - his third consecutive 30-point game - and 10 rebounds for Stanford (10-12, 4-6). Jeremy Green added 18, but he missed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left.
The Bruins trailed by six before closing the game on a 23-13 run that gave them a season split with the injury-riddled Cardinal, which won 70-59 last month.
Stanford dropped its ninth in a row away from home, its longest such streak since losing 15 consecutive games over the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.
UCLA was clutch at the line down the stretch, making 12 of its final 16 free throws, something that has plagued the Bruins most of the season.
Fields dunked to get the Cardinal within one with 1:04 left. Nelson was fouled and missed both free throws, but Lee, Dragovic and Roll were perfect in their trips to the line over the final 24 seconds.
Stanford led by six points to start the second half before it turned into a back-and-forth affair. A six-point run gave the Bruins a 48-45 lead midway through the half. Fields ran off seven in a row, capped by a 3-pointer, to put Stanford back in front 55-50. That was part of a 15-6 run that pushed Stanford's lead to 60-54.
From there, it was all UCLA. Fields scored eight of Stanford's final 13 points, while his scoring mate Green chipped in just two points.
The Cardinal built its largest lead of the first half, 18-12, on seven straight points by Fields. The Bruins closed within one on a 3-pointer by Roll before the Cardinal outscored them 12-8 to end the half ahead 32-29. Stanford opened the game with three consecutive 3-pointers, and hit 11 in the game, tying its season high.
