Air Force seeks to close in on conference leader BYU

Feb 27, 2007 - 2:55 PM BYU (21-7) at No. 20 Air Force (23-6) 9:00 pm EST

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Ticker) -- Sliding at the wrong time, Air Force needs a win to stay in the Mountain West Conference race.

The 20th-ranked Falcons look to snap a two-game losing streak when they host first-place Brigham Young on Tuesday.

Air Force (23-6, 10-5 MWC) lost consecutive games to Nevada Las Vegas and Texas Christian and dropped to third place in the MWC.

On Saturday, Matt McCraw scored 17 points but leading scorer Dan Nwaelele finished with just four on 0-of-6 shooting from the field for the Falcons, who dropped 2 1/2 games behind the Cougars for the top spot in the MWC.

Both losses came on the road, where Air Force is just 6-5 this season. The Falcons are 13-0 at home, have a 30-game winning steak in Colorado Springs and hope to avoid their first three-game skid since dropping five straight from February 17-March 3, 2003.

If Air Force can get back on track, it would set a school record with its 24th win, but it will have to do it against BYU (21-7, 11-3), which lost, 86-74, to San Diego State on Saturday.

The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Cougars.

BYU defeated Air Force, 61-52, on January 27.
