Hoyas hope to hang on to first place

Mar 3, 2007 - 2:08 PM Connecticut (17-12) at No. 10 Georgetown (22-6) 12:00 pm EST

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Georgetown Hoyas can clinch at least a share of the Big East Conference regular-season title with a win over Connecticut on Saturday.

Georgetown (22-6, 12-3 Big East) had its 11-game winning streak snapped on Monday at Syracuse in a 72-58 loss. Demetrius Nicholls scored 22 points for the Orange, who held Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert to just nine and six points, respectively.

The Hoyas loss dropped them into a tie with Pittsburgh for first place.

Connecticut (17-12, 6-9) is coming to the end of a disappointing season. The Huskies have dropped their last two games, most recently a 78-74 loss to Villanova in which freshman Scottie Reynolds set a record by scoring 40 points, the most ever by a Connecticut opponent at Gampel Pavilion.

The Huskies have clinched a spot in the Big East tournament and will have to wait on the outcome of Saturday's Providence-St. John's game to see if they will be an 11th or 12th seed.
