Washington State faces USC in Pac-10 showdown

Mar 3, 2007 - 3:57 PM No. 24 USC (21-9) at No. 13 Washington St (23-6) 5:00 pm EST

PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) -- Washington State is looking for its best finish in years.

The 13th-ranked Cougars aim to notch their first top-two finish in the Pac-10 Conference since 1983 when they host 24th-ranked USC on Saturday.

Washington State (23-6, 12-5 Pac-10) needs a win over the Trojans to clinch second place in the conference - two games ahead of USC. However, with a loss, the Cougars and Trojans would both finish at 12-6 with the tiebreaker going to USC.

Losers of two of its last three games, Washington State was defeated, 53-45, by second-ranked UCLA on Thursday. Kyle Weaver scored 14 points but leading scorer Derrick Low was held to just two on 1-of-8 shooting for the Cougars, who shot just 37 percent (18-of-49).

They will look to snap out of their funk against USC (21-9, 11-6), which is just 3-3 in its last six games, including an 85-70 loss to Washington on Thursday.

Nick Young, the Pac-10's third-ranked scorer at 17.2 points per game, scored 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting for the Trojans, who absorbed their fourth loss in their last five conference road games.

Washington State defeated USC, 58-55, in the last meeting between the teams on December 30. Weaver scored 12 points and sealed the victory with the go-ahead layup in the waning seconds.
