Butler squares off with Wright State in Horizon League title

Mar 6, 2007 - 4:14 PM No. 17 Butler (27-5) at Wright St. (22-9) 9:00 pm EST

DAYTON, Ohio (Ticker) -- Butler and Wright State were the two best Horizon League teams this season.

In a fitting end to the campaign, the 17th-ranked Bulldogs square off with the Raiders in the conference title game Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (27-5) and Raiders (22-9) both finished 13-3 in league play, but Wright State won the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament on a tiebreaker.

These conference rivals have played in the conference tourney three times since 1998, with Wright State posting a 61-57 triumph in the most recent meeting on March 1, 2005.

With a win Tuesday, Butler would set a school record for wins in a single season and exorcise some postseason demons. The Bulldogs have lost twice in the conference title game over the last six years, falling to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2003 and last season.

The Bulldogs survived a scare in a 67-66 overtime victory over Loyola in Saturday's semifinals. Pete Campbell scored 18 points and A.J. Graves made six free throws in the final 53 seconds.

The Raiders defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay, 67-51, on Saturday to advance to the title game for the first time since 1995. DaShaun Wood scored 25 to lead the Raiders, who have won 10 of their last 11 games.
