Marquette meets St. John's in first round of Big East Tourney

Mar 7, 2007 - 2:15 PM St. John's (16-14) vs. No. 19 Marquette (23-8) 9:00 pm EST

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- With the Big East Defensive Player of the Year sidelined, No. 19 Marquette knows it has other options.

The Golden Eagles likely will be without sophomore guard Jerel McNeal on Wednesday when they open the Big East Conference Tournament against St. John's.

McNeal, who also was selected to the second team All-Big East squad after averaging 14.8 points and 4.8 rebounds, suffered a thumb injury in Friday's practice and sat out Saturday night's 75-71 triumph over Pittsburgh.

Freshman David Cubillan proved to be more than capable off the bench, scoring a season-high 20 points. He was 4-of-7 from 3-point range and made all eight free throws against the Panthers.

The Golden Eagles are seeded sixth in the tournament after posting a 10-6 conference mark. They joined Pittsburgh and Georgetown as the only teams to reach double digits in conference wins in each of the past two seasons.

A charter member of the Big East, the Red Storm are back in the tournament after failing to qualify in each of the past three seasons. They went 7-9 against Big East foes and are seeded 11th.

The Red Storm snapped a three-game losing streak with Sundays's 77-64 triumph over Providence. Qa'rraan Calhoun scored a season-high 21 points after leading scorer Lamont Hamilton left with a hyperextended knee.

St. John's has won the Big East Tournament three times, most recently in 2000. This will be the first meeting of the season between the two schools.

The winner of this contest plays third-seeded Pittsburgh on Thursday.
