No. 6 Florida goes for fourth straight trip to SEC final
Mar 10, 2007 - 3:34 PM Ole Miss (20-11) at No. 6 Florida (27-5) 3:15 pm ESTATLANTA (Ticker) -- Florida has been a frequent participant in the Southeastern Conference Tournament title game. However, that was not always the case.
The sixth-ranked Gators attempt to become the third school to reach the SEC championship contest four straight years when they meet Mississippi on Saturday.
Last season's NCAA champions, Florida has won seven straight SEC tournament games and nine of its last 10. Prior to its recent run of success, the Gators had made three appearances in the championship contest (1934, 1989, 1994).
Florida has built its success around the balanced scoring attack of Taurean Green (13.2 pts.), Al Horford (13.1), Corey Brewer (12.6) and Joakim Noah (12.0). The foursome have combined to help the Gators lead the nation in field goal percentage (52.8) this season.
After scoring the first 17 points, Florida built a 25-point halftime advantage in Friday's 74-57 triumph over Georgia in the quarterfinals. Green scored 19 points while Brewer and Horford added 15 each.
The Gators have won the last five meetings against Mississippi, including a 79-70 victory January 20. They last faced the Rebels in the tournament in the 2001 semifinals.
Mississippi also got off to a great start in Thursday's quarterfinal against Louisiana State en route to an 80-60 victory. The Rebels limited the Tigers to just 4-of-29 shooting in the first half, including 1-of-13 from the arc.
Bam Doyne made 9-of-17 shots and led the Rebels with 26 points.
