TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- North Carolina hopes an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title will lead to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

The eighth-ranked Tar Heels shoot for their first ACC title in nine years Sunday when they face in-state rival North Carolina State in the conference championship game.

North Carolina will be making its first championship game appearance since 2001 on the strength of Saturday's 71-56 win over fourth-seeded Boston College.

Freshman Brandan Wright spent the game slashing to the basket, hitting 10-of-12 shots to lead the Tar Heels with 20 points.

Leading scorer Tyler Hansbrough, who still is trying to get used to playing with a face mask after suffering a broken nose in the regular-season finale, managed just nine points but led the team with 13 rebounds.

The Wolfpack advanced with a 72-64 win over third-seeded Virginia Tech. Junior Gavin Grant connected on all 11 of his free throws and led N.C. State with 20 points.

The Wolfpack will need a win over North Carolina to get into the NCAA Tournament.
