Kansas and Texas meet in championship rematch

Mar 11, 2007 - 2:11 PM No. 14 Texas (24-8) at No. 2 Kansas (29-4) 3:00 pm EST

OKLAHOMA CITY (Ticker) -- Kansas will meet a familiar foe when it goes for a second straight Big 12 Conference title.

The second-ranked Jayhawks look to repeat as Big 12 Conference tournament champions Sunday when they meet No. 14 Texas in the championship game.

Kansas captured its fifth conference crown last season at the hands of the Longhorns, who have yet to win a Big 12 title despite appearing in the championship game three times in the last four years.

However, last year's Texas squad did not have Kevin Durant, the sensational freshman forward who captured the conference Rookie of the Year award.

Durant needs 36 points to become the highest single-season scorer in Big 12 history. He enters Sunday's contest with 809 points, trailing only Marcus Fizer's 844 for Iowa State in the 1999-2000 season.

Durant scored 32 points in his last meeting with the Jayhawks, but the Longhorns squandered a 12-point halftime lead en route to a 90-86 loss in Lawrence.

Kansas advanced to Sunday's showdown with a 67-61 victory over Kansas State on Saturday. Mario Chalmers led the Jayhawks with 16 points.

Texas reached the final Saturday with a 69-64 win over Oklahoma State. Durant scored 26 points and hit the decisive 3-pointer to secure the victory.
