Big East champ Georgetown surges into matchup vs. Belmont

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Georgetown is peaking going into the NCAA Tournament.

The Hoyas (26-6) have won 15 of their last 16 games to earn the second seed in the East Region and a first-round date with Atlantic Sun champion Belmont on Thursday.

Georgetown rolled to a resounding 65-42 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday in the Big East tournament final. Big East Player of the Year and tournament Most Outstanding Player Jeff Green, a versatile 6-9 junior forward, scored 51 points in the Hoyas' last two victories and averages 14.3 points.

This will be the 24th NCAA appearance for Georgetown, which advanced to the regional semifinals last year. The Hoyas are 40-22 all-time in the NCAAs, winning the championship in 1984.

Roy Hibbert, a 7-2 junior center who averages 13 points and six rebounds per game, joins Green on the front line for the Hoyas, helping to anchor the fifth-best scoring defense in the country that holds opponents to just 56.5 points per game.

Belmont (23-9) has won seven consecutive games - each by at least 15 points - including a 94-67 victory at East Tennessee State to defend its Atlantic Sun championship.

Junior Justin Hare, who was named Atlantic Sun tournament MVP for a second straight season, leads the Bruins in scoring (14.4 ppg). Senior Andrew Preston and sophomore Andy Wicke joined Hare on the All-Tournament Team.

The Bruins led the Atlantic Sun in scoring defense (64.0 points), 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.1) and scoring margin (plus-9.0). They lost to UCLA last season in their only other trip to the NCAAs.

Georgetown last was seeded second in the NCAA Tournament during the 1995-96 season, when the Hoyas advanced to the regional final behind point guard Allen Iverson before falling to Massachusetts.

The winner will face either seventh-seeded Boston College or 10th-seeded Texas Tech in Saturday's second round.
