Indiana seeks revenge vs. Gonzaga in opening round

Mar 14, 2007 - 11:48 PM Gonzaga (23-10) at Indiana (20-10) 9:55 pm EDT

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- This time around, Indiana hopes for a different outcome.

The seventh-seeded Hoosiers will try to turn the tables from last season's NCAA Tournament result when they face 10th seed Gonzaga on Thursday in the first round of the West Region.

Under former coach Mike Davis, Indiana came up short, 90-80, to Gonzaga in the second round last season.

Under new coach Kelvin Sampson, the Hoosiers are making their 34th trip to the tournament. Indiana finished 10-6 and in third place in the Big Ten Conference to receive an at-large bid.

The Hoosiers are led by junior D.J. White, who leads the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.0), and second-leading scorer Roderick Wilmont, who is shooting 39 percent from 3-point range.

Indiana has won five national championships - third most all-time.

Big West Conference tourney champion Gonzaga has established a pretty fair tradition of its own, earning its ninth consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament. Seven have come under coach Mark Few, who guided the program to an 11-3 mark conference play.

With the suspension of center Josh Heytvelt on drug charges, guard Derek Raivio will have to continue to carry the offensive load for the Bulldogs, who have won four straight first-round games in the tournament.

This marks as the third time in school history that Gonzaga has received a No. 10 seed. In 1999, the Bulldogs lost in the regional final to eventual national champion Connecticut, and in 2000 advanced to the regional semifinals.
