Florida battles Landry, Purdue in the second round

Mar 18, 2007 - 1:54 PM Purdue (22-11) at Florida (30-5) 2:15 pm EDT

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Florida is looking for a return trip to the regional semifinal on Sunday.

The top-seeded Gators will try to advance out of the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year when they face ninth-seeded Purdue in a Midwest Region matchup.

Coach Billy Donovan and the Gators began defense of their title in impressive fashion on Thursday, coasting to a 112-69 triumph over 16th-seeded Jackson State.

Corey Brewer scored 21 points and the low-post duo of Al Horford and Joakim Noah had double-doubles for Florida, which is riding a five-game winning streak.

The Boilermakers posted a 72-63 victory over Arizona in their opening round matchup led by Carl Landry, who scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

"It was a great feeling after the game, but we woke up with a new mindset to beat Florida (Sunday)," Landry said. "It was a great feeling beating Arizona, but no one had us making the NCAA Tournament and going to the second round. We are here now and hopefully we can have success against Florida."

At 6-7, Landry will have his hands full with Florida's low-post tandem as he is giving up at least three inches in the matchup.
