Memphis goes for 24th consecutive win vs. Nevada

Mar 18, 2007 - 3:03 PM Nevada (29-4) at Memphis (31-3) 4:45 pm EDT

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Coach John Calipari has Memphis going strong and that's the way he would like to keep it.

The second-seeded Tigers hope to push the nation's longest winning streak to 24 games when they face seventh-seeded Nevada in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in a South Region matchup.

Despite a lackluster start, Memphis woke up to roll to a 73-58 victory over 15th seed North Texas in its first round game on Friday.

When the Tigers have won their first NCAA Tournament contest, they have been able to reach at least the regional semifinals eight of the 11 times.

Nevada is coming off a 77-71 overtime triumph over 10th-seeded Creighton in the first round two days ago. Marcelus Kemp and Nick Fazekas both registered double-doubles in the victory.

Fazekas, Kemp and Ramon Sessions all average in double figures to lead the Wolf Pack, who are shooting 48.7 percent from the floor.

The Wolf Pack are looking to make their second appearance in the regional semifinal in school history. Nevada's first trip to the round of 16 was in 2004.

The winner of this contest will battle third-seed Texas A&M in the South Regional semifinals in San Antonio on Thursday.
