Baylor continues success at home with win over Jackson State

Nov 19, 2010 - 4:27 AM Waco, TX (Sports Network) - Perry Jones III scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as the 17th-ranked Baylor Bears defeated the Jackson State Tigers, 63-49.

A.J. Walton added 14 points and five assists for the Bears (3-0), who are off to a 3-0 start for the fourth consecutive year.

Fred Ellis and Quincy Acy each tallied eight points for Baylor, which has won eight straight home games -- the longest run since the Bears' Ferrell Center- record 11-game streak last season.

"I think it is good that other people can step up," Jones said. "I think that causes a lot of problems for the opposing team, because they just can't stick to one or two guys. It is multiple guys that can actually score the ball and I think that is going to be an advantage for us."

Rod Melvin finished with a game-high 22 points for the Tigers (0-3), who got eight points from Jenirro Bush.

Ahead by four, 12-8, the Bears went on a 9-3 spurt. Jones' jumper gave Baylor a 21-11 edge with just over 7 1/2 minutes left until intermission.

The margin reached 11, 30-19, on a Jones slam and Stargell Love's layup with a bit more than 3 1/2 minutes remaining. The score was 34-26 at the break.

Melvin made back-to-back three-pointers to get Jackson State within 41-32 with 14:43 to play in the game. Baylor, though, responded with six consecutive free throws to take a 47-32 edge with 8:39 to play in the game.

Bush cut the deficit to 54-46 with a three-pointer with just less than 2 1/2 minutes to go before eight unanswered points by the Bears put the game away. Ellis made two foul shots to give Baylor a 62-46 margin with a minute to go.

"We had a couple of good practices this week out here," Tigers head coach Tevester Anderson said. "We just came from Central Florida and didn't play well at all. I thought when we got out here we really worked on defense because our defense was not tough enough and was not physical enough. I thought we played much better defensively tonight and we forced some turnovers."
