Michigan State easily handles Tennessee Tech
Nov 28, 2010 - 9:48 PM East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Durrell Summers scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field to help second-ranked Michigan State beat Tennessee Tech, 73-55, at the Breslin Center. The Spartans (5-1) notched their 50th straight home win over a non-conference opponent.
Draymond Green finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists for Michigan State, which recently finished in third place in the Maui Invitational. Their lone loss to date came against UConn, the eventual Maui champ.
The Spartans have a huge test looming on Wednesday, when they visit top-ranked Duke as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
"I think we did have some rust on us from the trip," said Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. "We practiced better than we played. That's always disappointing and not very encouraging going into a game that we're going into on Wednesday."
Kalin Lucas had 15 points in the win.
Zach Bailey and Kevin Murphy both scored 11 points for the Golden Eagles (0-3).
"Today's game was a little sloppy," said Tennessee Tech head coach Mike Sutton. "I don't think you saw either team play its best basketball, but I am certainly proud of our kids for how hard they fought."
Bailey nailed a three-pointer and Murphy made 1-of-2 free throws to give Tennessee Tech an early 6-4 lead. Summers converted a layup to tie the game and Green followed with a three-pointer that gave Michigan State the lead for good.
Zac Swansey knocked down a trey to pull the Golden Eagles to within two at 18-16 with just under five minutes remaining in the first half, but the Spartans ended the frame on a 14-4 surge to take a 32-20 lead into the break.
A Summers dunk pushed the advantage to 43-23 early in the second half, and the Spartans' lead never dipped below 14 the rest of the way.
