No. 6 Michigan State buries Bowling Green
Dec 5, 2010 - 4:09 AM East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Durrell Summers finished with 14 points to lead sixth-ranked Michigan State in a 74-39 rout of Bowling Green.Draymond Green ended with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Keith Appling added 11 points for the Spartans (6-2), who bounced back from Wednesday's 84-79 loss at Duke.
"I've learned one thing, I might be the dumbest scheduler in America. My team is tired," joked Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, whose club also played in the competitive Maui Invitational last month.
Michigan State was playing an overmatched Bowling Green team that had won only one game this season -- against Ohio-Dominican on November 15. The Spartans held a 51-26 rebounding edge, and might have recorded an even bigger blowout if not for their 21 turnovers.
Scott Thomas netted 11 points and brought down six rebounds to lead the Falcons (1-7), who lost their sixth consecutive game.
The first half was close, and it was still a one-point game when Jordon Crawford drained a three-pointer to get the Falcons within 20-19 with 2:32 left.
Inside the final minute, though, Summers drained a three-pointer and Appling dropped in a fastbreak layup to give Michigan State a 25-19 halftime lead.
Dee Brown's jumper a little more than a minute into the second half had Bowling Green within 25-23, but the Spartans responded with a 21-1 run. Summers kicked it off with a three and added another later in the stretch. Appling also sank two treys, while Korie Lucious' layup with 12:47 on the clock ended the run and made it a 46-24 game.
The Spartans' lead continued to grow down the stretch as they cruised to the victory.
"It is a 40-minute game and you have to keep going for the full 40 minutes to give yourself a chance to win," Bowling Green head coach Louis Orr said. "Our guys gave a great effort but just didn't play well enough for long enough."
