Charlotte sends Vols to second straight loss
Dec 18, 2010 - 4:20 AM Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Phil Jones hit the game-winning shot with under 10 seconds left in regulation as Charlotte knocked off No. 7 Tennessee, 49-48.Jamar Briscoe led the way with 14 points, while Derrio Green added 13 points for the 49ers (5-6), who have won two of three and posted their first win against a top-10 opponent since 2004.
Charlotte claimed victory just days after its top scorer, Shamari Spears, was dismissed from the team.
Scotty Hopson was limited to 13 points and Tobias Harris registered 12 points with 10 rebounds for the Volunteers (7-2), who couldn't snap back to attention following an 89-82 loss to Oakland on Tuesday.
The comeback victory started when Briscoe hit two from the line with 27.9 seconds left and Charlotte got within 48-47.
An inbounds pass came to Melvin Goins who was fouled by Jones with 19.5 remaining. However, his first try from the charity stripe rolled around the rim and bounced out with Jones coming up with the defensive board.
Green pushed the ball upcourt and found Green, who beat a double team by hitting Jones under basket for an open lay-in with just over nine seconds to go that put Charlotte up 49-48.
Tennessee called time out with 3.3 seconds to play, and following the break, Tatum received ball well beyond the arc and his desperation shot as time expired hit the backboard and bounced away.
The Vols were never able to shake the 49ers from the start, never leading by more than six points at any time during the first half. Jeronne Maymon hit a deuce and Tennessee took a 24-20 edge to the break.
Jones connected on a layup early in the second half which put Charlotte ahead 28-26, but Tennessee reeled off nine of the next 12 points to lead 35-31 on a Skylar McBee trey with 8:47 to play.
Hopson's jumper with 2:31 remaining gave the visitors a 48-42 edge, but Javarris Barnett sank a three on the next possession, then both Hopson and Tatum turned the ball over before Briscoe was fouled.
Game Notes
Each team has won five times in the series...Barnett posted a team-best eight rebounds...Briscoe added four assists...Neither team shot well from the field, as the Vols hit 34.9 percent (22-of-63) and the 49ers drained only 30.2 percent (16-of-53).
