Georgetown cruises past Loyola-Maryland

Dec 19, 2010 - 12:19 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Austin Freeman and Hollis Thompson each scored 14 points to lead 15th-ranked Georgetown to a 99-75 rout of Loyola- Maryland at the Verizon Center.

Henry Sims added 12 points and Chris Wright chipped in 11, as the Hoyas raced out to a big lead in the first half and emptied their bench in the second half with the outcome well in hand.

Georgetown (10-1) has won two straight since its lone loss of the season on December 9 at Temple and will wrap up its non-conference schedule on Thursday at Memphis before opening Big East play on December 29 at Notre Dame.

Justin Drummond scored 21 points for Loyola (4-6), which has lost four of its last five. Erik Etherly contributed 12 points in defeat, while leading scorer Jamal Barney finished with just six.

Loyola opened the game's scoring and trailed just 7-6 in the early going, but the Hoyas gained a little separation with the next five points. It was still a four-point game with just under 13 minutes left in the half after J'hared Hall's layup for Loyola made it 14-10, but Markel Starks countered with a three-pointer and Wright followed with a steal and a layup to ignite a 27-8 Georgetown run.

The Greyhounds did not make a basket during the Hoya surge, as all eight points came from the free-throw line. Eight Hoyas scored during the balanced burst and Jason Clark's layup with just under four minutes left gave Georgetown a 41-18 cushion before Hall ended Loyola's lengthy field goal drought with a three-pointer.

"I think we were fairly attentive," Hoyas coach John Thompson III said. "The stats show it, the score shows it, particularly in the first half. Our guys had a feel for what they were trying to do and how we had to counter it."

A dunk by Freeman gave the Hoyas a 48-22 advantage and they went to the break with a comfortable 50-27 lead. Georgetown made an astounding 18-of-23 shots in the first half.

Freeman started the second half with a three-pointer and Thompson added a shot from beyond the arc soon after to give Georgetown its first 30-point edge at 60-30. The Hoyas went on to lead by as many as 36 before cruising to the finish.
