Lamb makes history as Kentucky wallops Winthrop

Dec 23, 2010 - 12:54 AM Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Doron Lamb set the single-game freshman scoring record at Kentucky with 32 points, and the 13th-ranked Wildcats routed the Winthrop Eagles, 89-52, at Rupp Arena.

Lamb had an incredible shooting day, going 11-for-12 from the field, including 7-for-8 from three-point range, and 3-for-3 from the free throw line for Kentucky (9-2), which won its fourth straight game by double-digits. Lamb eclipsed the mark held by Jamal Mashburn, who scored 31 against Georgia on February 3, 1991.

"It's an honor to break the record," Lamb said. "Kentucky basketball is the biggest program in the country. I give thanks to my teammates for finding me on the court and giving me the ball."

Brandon Knight added 21 points, while Terrence Jones had 11 for Kentucky, which shot 52.4 percent as a team.

Matt Morgan scored 18 points to pace the Eagles (5-7), who have lost four of five. Reggie Middleton added 13 points, and Charles Corbin contributed 10 in defeat.

Kentucky never trailed and took control from the beginning thanks to its red- hot shooter.

"We told our guys that (Lamb) had a great motor," said Winthrop head coach Randy Peele. "We told our guys that he could really play. We thought that he was a tremendous shooter."

The Wildcats scored 10 of the game's first 12 points, and Lamb got on the scoreboard for the first time with a three-pointer for an 18-6 lead 4:21 into the contest.

Lamb hit three more three-pointers before the half was eight minutes old, with the last of the trio making it 29-11. His fifth basket from beyond the arc put UK ahead by 18 before a 9-0 Winthrop halved the lead with 2 1/2 minutes remaining before the intermission.

Kentucky, though, closed on a 10-0 run to grab a 19-point halftime lead, as Lamb's layup in the final moments gave him 17 first-half points and the Wildcats a 51-32 lead.

With the game well in hand, the second half served as a show of Lamb's talents, as he continued to stay hot from the field.

He poured in a fastbreak layup and a pair of free throws in the first couple minutes for a 57-34 Kentucky lead, though his shot at perfection came to an end with a miss from three-point range from 13 minutes left.

Less than a minute later, though, his three-point play put him at 24 points, and he drilled another three near the midway point to keep UK ahead comfortably, 69-46.

He hit his final three-pointer of the game with eight minutes left to push his total to 30, and his fastbreak layup with 6:38 left sealed the record.

"I didn't even realize I was hitting a lot of threes," Lamb said. "I knew I had hit a lot, but didn't know how many I had hit."

Lamb was pulled from the game with 5:10 remaining, and the crowd, realizing the feat, awarded him with a standing ovation.

Lamb is tied for third all-time for the school's single-game field goal percentage (.917) among players with 10 or more attempts...Winthrop finished 3-for-13 from three-point range...Kentucky improved to 5-0 at home this season and leads the all-time series with Winthrop, 2-0.
