Syracuse stays perfect with rout of Drexel

Dec 23, 2010 - 3:30 AM Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Kris Joseph poured in 25 points, Scoop Jardine added 21 and the fifth-ranked Syracuse Orange throttled upstart Drexel, 93-65, at the Carrier Dome.

Rick Jackson posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Brandon Triche added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Orange assisted on 17 of 35 made baskets and connected on 11-of-12 shots out of halftime to take control.

Jardine made 9-of-10 shots and Joseph 9-of-12 for Syracuse (13-0), which played for the third time in five days and didn't show tired legs with a scorching 63.6 percent shooting percentage.

"The second half we played as well as you can play on offense," said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. "The first 14 minutes we were 18-for-20. We outrebounded a team that is right up there with the best rebounding teams in the country."

Gerald Colds scored 16 points and Chris Fouch donated 14 for Drexel (8-2), which saw its six-game winning streak come to an end.

Syracuse went nearly six minutes without a field goal at the game's outset but used a 7-0 flurry to go in front 15-10. It slowly pushed the edge higher until it reached 35-22 at the half.

The Orange couldn't miss out of the locker room, turning the game into a rout. A slam by Jackson capped six straight in the first 90 seconds, and a layup in transition by Joseph capped a 12-4 stretch in the half's first three-plus minutes.

Syracuse made its first eight field goal attempts in the half, as Triche's three-pointer with just under 14 1/2 minutes to play was the first shot not to find the bottom of the net. The Orange had built a 51-31 lead by that stage, and Joseph's lone trey capped the torrid opening stretch for a 58-34 lead with about 12 1/2 minutes remaining.

The lead crept up to 29 points at 83-54 on James Southerland's triple with just over five minutes on the clock, and the home team emptied its bench soon thereafter while cruising to victory.
