Coach K passes Smith for second on wins list
Dec 30, 2010 - 7:08 AM Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski passed Dean Smith for second place on the all-time NCAA wins list as his No. 1 Blue Devils dominated UNC Greensboro, 108-62.Coach K notched the 880th win of his career to move past the former North Carolina coach and now trails just Bob Knight, who sits at 902 wins, for tops in Division I men's basketball.
The Duke coach noted that you have to have good players and a strong commitment from the university to succeed so often.
"So I don't know if that's so much an achievement as the result of having all those things," Krzyzewski said. "I want to thank play players from Army, from Duke and I want to thank my coaches.
"A coach wins because he has good people, and I've had great people."
Kyle Singler had 27 points and Nolan Smith totaled 26 points with five rebounds and nine assists for the Blue Devils (12-0), who have won by double- digits in 10 of their 12 games this year. Seth Curry added 15 points for the defending national champions, who have won 22 consecutive games dating back to a 79-72 loss at Maryland on March 3, 2010. Duke has triumphed in 30 of its last 31 games overall and has won 12 straight games at the Greensboro Coliseum.
"I congratulate Mike on this milestone victory," said Dean Smith. "I am sure he would want to share the credit for the wins with all his players and staff. I enjoyed competing against Mike's teams throughout the many years I was at UNC. I wish him continued health and personal success."
Aaron Brackett had 14 points and six rebounds while Korey Van Dussen added 13 points and four boards for the Spartans (0-12), who have lost all nine meetings against Duke in the series.
"I wish we could have given him a little bit better of a fight," said Spartans head coach Mike Dement. "You could tell that it was something special to his players and the played really well and they shot really well."
The Blue Devils led this game from start to finish as the team opened with the first eight points of the game. Trevis Simpson's layup just over two minutes in cut the Spartans deficit to six, which proved to be the closest the team got the rest of the way.
Duke continued to build on its lead through the first 20 minutes and was helped by three three-pointers from Smith and two from Singler to take a 53-32 into the break.
Singler hit a three-pointer just under four minutes into the second half for a 65-38 lead and Duke later ripped off eight straight points for a 73-40 advantage a bit later.
Duke put the emphasis on the win with a 21-0 run that saw the team hold a 103-53 lead on Andre Dawkins slam with 3 1/2 minutes to play.
