Idaho hands No. 21 Utah State first WAC loss

Feb 10, 2011 - 6:20 AM Moscow, ID (Sports Network) - Deremy Geiger, a Utah State transfer, scored 12 points with nine rebounds and Idaho stunned the 21st-ranked Aggies, 64-56, at the Cowan Spectrum.

Utah State will have to wait at least one more game to claim a share of the WAC regular season crown.

A game that was supposed to be just another destination on the Aggies' journey to a perfect conference record turned into a large road block. Utah State could have clinched at least a share of the WAC crown with a win, but more importantly, the loss was a damaging one for the Aggies' profile in case they need an at-large selection.

Wednesday night, the Vandals proved they are beatable.

Jeff Ledbetter scored 14 points, Kyle Barone posted 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Shawn Henderson added nine points for Idaho (14-10, 7-5 WAC), which has won two straight since a four-game losing skid. The Vandals beat a Top-25 team for the first time since a December 6, 2009 victory over Portland.

Tai Wesley totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Brockeith Pane scored 14 points with seven assists for Utah State (22-3, 11-1), which saw its 17-game winning streak and 25-game regular-season conference winning streak come to an end. Utah State's last conference loss came on January 4, 2009 at Louisiana Tech.

Idaho took a 27-24 edge in the locker room and doubled that lead after the midway point of the second half at 48-42 on Ledbetter's three-pointer. The margin grew to 55-46 when Ledbetter made all three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc.

Utah State stayed within arm's length and Williams' three-pointer from the left wing cut the deficit to 60-55 with 49.6 seconds to go. Geiger calmly sank two free throws with 47.6 seconds to play. The Aggies didn't make shots down the stretch and couldn't cut into the deficit.

After trailing early on in the contest, Utah State used eight successive points to claim a 13-10 edge thanks to Wesley's layup. Idaho stayed close and reeled off seven straight points to take 24-19 lead on Barone's three-point play.
