Abele cleared to play for Duquesne
Nov 1, 2011 - 7:39 PM Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Duquesne University announced on Tuesday that center Martins Abele, who transferred from Radford, will be allowed to play this season. The 7-foot-1 native of Latvia enrolled at Duquesne back in August, and under normal NCAA transfer rules, would have to sit out the entire upcoming season before returning in 2012-13.
But the school learned that Abele will have his remaining three years on eligibility intact after the NCAA waived the normal requirements.
Abele will have to sit out the first four games of the regular season after Duquesne self-reported a violation stemming from the 20-year-old's impermissible participation in summer league games before transferring.
Abele totaled 5.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest last year for the Highlanders.
