Arizona uses strong second half to beat Ball State

Nov 14, 2011 - 3:24 AM Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - Kyle Fogg scored 21 points, Solomon Hill added 16 with 11 rebounds and the 16th-ranked Arizona Wildcats used a strong second half to beat the Ball State Cardinals, 73-63, at McKale Center.

Nick Johnson posted nine points for Arizona (3-0), which rallied from a 38-29 halftime deficit.

"Our defense couldn't have given a better effort and the crowd was also a big help. The team fed off their energy and got the win," Arizona head coach Sean Miller said.

The Wildcats attempted 30 more free throws than the visitors. Arizona finished 31-of-43, while Ball State made 6-of-13.

Jarrod Jones had a game-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Cardinals (0-1), who finished 19-13 a season ago.

Ball State went up 42-31 early in the second half, but Arizona slowly chipped away at the deficit. Jesse Perry nailed a three-pointer and Nick Johnson made two free throws to put the Wildcats ahead 56-55 with 6:07 remaining.

The lead stretched to 62-55 before the Wildcats sealed the win at the foul line.

Ball State opened a 17-10 lead on Jauwan Scaife's steal and fastbreak layup. After the Wildcats closed to within four at 19-15, the Cardinals countered with a 7-0 run.
