No.5 Syracuse thumps Manhattan

Nov 15, 2011 - 3:38 AM Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Dion Waiters scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures, as the fifth-ranked Syracuse Orange cruised to a 92-56 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers in the opening round of the NIT Season Tipoff.

Kris Joseph and James Southerland both had 15 points, Brandon Triche had 12 points and Fab Melo added 11 points for the Orange (2-0), who will play Albany on Tuesday.

Kidani Brutus scored 15 points, while George Beamon finished with 14 points for the Jaspers (1-1).

The Orange have won 11 straight games over the Jaspers and they wasted little time establishing their superiority, running out to a 52-26 halftime lead.

Joseph, a senior, scored his 1,000th career point in the first half, becoming the 55th player in program history to do so.

"It means a lot to me," said Joseph of reaching the milestone. "Growing up, I always told myself whatever college I go to, I want to be a part of that club. It is a great honor and an elite club to be a part of. Fortunately enough, I was able to do it here at Syracuse University."

Syracuse shot 57.9 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes, while converting 16 Jaspers turnovers into 22 points.

"Well they made some mistakes, they made some errors, but I don't know if they were forced or not," said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. "We played some man for a while and we did a decent job. Our defense was good, we were active, we really moved well."

Triche was also strong, leading all scorers with 12 points at the break.

The Jaspers, under first-year coach Steve Masiello, continued to struggle on the offensive end after the break, shooting just 32.1 percent from the field, which included a 6-of-20 effort from beyond the arc.

They will face Brown on Tuesday.

Syracuse, which opened the season with a 78-53 victory over Fordham on Saturday, has not lost to Manhattan since February 4, 1965.

Joseph now has 1,011 career points...Masiello took over as head coach after spending six years as an assistant at Louisville...Syracuse leads the all-time series 21-7.
