No. 2 Kentucky overpowers Portland

Nov 27, 2011 - 4:23 AM Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Terrence Jones and Darius Miller both scored 19 points, as No. 2 Kentucky earned an 87-63 victory over Portland at Rupp Arena.

Marquis Teague added 14 points and eight assists for the Wildcats (6-0), who have won 36 straight home games under coach John Calipari.

Anthony Davis had 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in the victory, while Michael Kidd-Gilchrist finished with 11 points.

"No one is playing for themselves. We are all playing for the team," said Jones.

Nemanja Mitrovic scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Pilots (2-4), losers of four straight.

Tanner Riley had 14 points and Tim Douglas added 12 in defeat.

Kentucky used an 18-3 run to grab a 31-15 lead late in the first half. The Pilots responded with an 8-1 spurt, making it a 32-23 game on Dorian Cason's jumper with 1:59 remaining, but the Wildcats finished strong to head into the break with a 38-26 advantage.

Jones, a Portland native, paced Kentucky with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting over the first 20 minutes of play. Portland, despite its struggles, flashed ability from the perimeter, hitting 6-of-12 first-half three-pointers.

"We shot it well and we thought if we executed our offense that we would get shots," said Pilots coach Eric Reveno.

The Pilots opened the second half strong, cutting the deficit to 43-37 on Cason's free throw with just over 16 minutes remaining. But Kentucky reeled off seven unanswered points to re-establish a comfortable lead.

The advantage grew to more than 20 in the closing minutes.

In all, the Pilots hit 11-of-23 three-pointers, but committed 17 turnovers. Kentucky's main advantage came from the charity stripe, where it outscored Portland 24-6.

"We're still learning," said Calipari. "The biggest thing we've got to learn and spend time on is guarding three-point shooters."
