Michigan State takes down UMKC

Dec 20, 2011 - 4:10 AM East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Branden Dawson and Brandon Wood scored 16 points apiece to power No. 19 Michigan State to an 89-54 victory over UMKC at the Breslin Center.

Adreian Payne had 11 points for the Spartans, while Draymond Green finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

Michigan State notched its 10th straight win after opening the season with consecutive losses to North Carolina and Duke.

Trinity Hall paced the Kangaroos (7-6) with 16 points. UMKC had won six of its previous seven games.

The Spartans took control early, scoring 16 of the game's first 18 points. Michigan State built a 40-20 halftime lead and extended its advantage to 53-23 on a Payne jumper nearly five minutes into the second half.

An Alex Gauna free throw put the hosts up 68-26 with 10:44 remaining and Michigan State cruised to the lopsided decision.

Game Notes

The Spartans shot 61 percent from the floor, while holding UMKC to 38 percent shooting...Monday's game marked the first meeting between these programs...Michigan State is 20-0 all-time against current members of the Summit League.
