No. 10 Marquette downs Milwaukee
Dec 23, 2011 - 5:06 AM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Junior Cadougan finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, leading No. 10 Marquette to a 64-50 victory over Milwaukee on Thursday.Darius Johnson-Odom scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Davante Gardner donated 12 points to go with seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles (11-1), who bounced back after dropping a 67-59 decision to LSU on Monday.
Marquette remains perfect all-time against the Panthers, winning all 39 meetings between the programs.
Ryan Allen paced the Panthers (9-4) with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Kaylon Williams netted 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Kyle Kelm added 10 points for Milwaukee, which failed to carry over momentum from an 86-50 thumping of Nebraska-Omaha on December 17.
The game remained close throughout the first half, as the Golden Eagles led 11-7 with just over 13 minutes to play before the break, and a jumper by Johnson-Odom with 12:55 left in the opening half put Marquette up 16-7.
But, Milwaukee scored the next five points to make it a four-point game, 16-12, with 10 1/2 minutes to go.
Marquette responded with a 7-2 run over the next two-plus minutes to take its largest lead of the half at nine, 23-14.
A pair of free throws by Tony Meier with 1:46 left made it a two-point game, 27-25, but the Golden Eagles took a 31-26 lead into the locker room.
Marquette scored the first six points of the second half to expand its lead to 37-26, before the run was snapped by an Allen slam with 15:49 to play.
A jumper by Jae Crowder put the Golden Eagles up by 13, 45-32, with 9:58 to go in the game, but the Panthers responded by scoring the next six points to cut it to a seven-point game with 8:46 remaining.
Milwaukee would come no closer, and a pair of free throws by Crowder with 2:14 left gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the game at 17, 61-44.
Game Notes
The Golden Eagles shot 39 percent from the floor and 2-of-11 from three-point range, while Milwaukee shot a lowly 27 percent from the floor and 4-of-28 from beyond the arc...Crowder finished with nine points and seven rebounds...The Panthers turned the ball over 16 times, to only 12 turnovers for Marquette.
