Final
UNLV dominates Golden Bears
Dec 24, 2011 - 3:36 AM Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Anthony Marshall scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds to go with three steals as No. 21 UNLV rolled past California, 85-68, on Friday.Chace Stanback finished with 15 points, and Mike Moser netted 14 points to go with eight rebounds for the Runnin' Rebels (13-2), who have won four consecutive games since dropping a 62-51 decision to Wisconsin on December 10. Oscar Bellfield contributed 11 points and dished out 11 assists for UNLV.
"I was extremely proud of our effort," UNLV head coach Dave Rice said. "For 35 of the 40 minutes, we were sensational. We had about five minutes where we were a little disappointed with our effort on the defensive end, but overall, it was a good win against a quality team."
Justin Cobbs paced the Golden Bears (10-3) with 20 points and five assists, while Allen Crabbe added 13 points and six rebounds. Jorge Gutierrez donated 12 points and six boards and Harper Kamp added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Bears, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.
The game remained close through the first seven minutes of the first half, as UNLV led 15-14 with 13 minutes remaining.
But the Runnin' Rebels began to assert their dominance, using an 21-4 run over the next nine-plus minutes to take a comfortable 36-18 lead with just under five minutes to play in the opening 20 minutes. UNLV took a 46-26 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Runnin' Rebels continued to make shots, as a three-pointer by Marshall with under 12 minutes to play put UNLV up 65-40.
The Golden Bears scored the first four points following a media timeout with 11:25 to go to pull within 65-44, but UNLV kept the pressure on, and a trey by Bellfield with less than nine minutes remaining gave the Rebels their largest lead at 72-45.
California got it to a 13-point game, 75-62, with three minutes to play, but the Golden Bears would come no closer.
