No. 13 Indiana upsets No. 2 Ohio State

Jan 1, 2012 - 3:07 AM Bloomington, IN (Sports Network) - Victor Oladipo made the go-ahead layup late in regulation, as the 13th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers took down the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, 74-70, in a Big Ten brawl at Assembly Hall.

Trailing by one, 70-69, with under a minute to play, Verdell Jones III stole the ball from Ohio State's Aaron Craft. Jones threw the ball down the court for Oladipo, who made a layup with 36 seconds remaining.

Craft then failed to control a pass under the basket and the ball went out of bounds. Jordan Hulls made 1-of-2 from the foul line at the other end to make it 72-70 with 13.4 ticks to go.

William Buford seemed unaware of the situation by throwing up a contested three-pointer. The ball bounced off the rim and landed in the hands of Christian Watford for Indiana.

"We were out of timeouts and the action was run and we were trying to tell them that we can drive it as well," Ohio State head coach Thad Matta said. "I was hoping that we may look inside, but when he came off, he drove it and I can't go back on that."

Watford made both foul shots to give the Hoosiers wins over the AP No. 1 ranked team and No. 2 team in the same season for the first time in program history.

Indiana (13-1, 1-1 Big Ten) upset then No. 1 Kentucky by a 73-72 margin on December 10th. Indiana is the ninth team since the 1996-97 season to beat teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the same season and the third team since 1996-97 to knock off teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the same month. The last time a team beat the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the same season was 2009-10 (Louisville, Tennessee).

Ohio State (13-2, 1-1) saw a five-game winning streak come to an end.

Deshaun Thomas made a jumper from the foul line with 1:53 remaining to give Ohio State a 70-69 edge.

Jared Sullinger blocked Watford's shot at the other end. Buford then turned the ball over himself.

Jones failed to make a jumper from the foul line, but he stole the ball from Craft at the other end.

"As far as the players on the court, they kept giving us confidence," Indiana head coach Tom Crean said. "They came to every timeout totally locked in. We could see it at the 7:38 TV timeout mark. They were so locked in to what they knew it would take to win. We knew we were playing against a great team. They made plays and we made plays. We played with a sense of toughness tonight. Our players matched the Ohio State toughness and energy."

The Buckeyes put together a 10-2 run early on to grab a double-digit lead. Buford tallied four points during the surge, which Sullinger capped with two free throws for a 17-7 edge with under 13 minutes left.

Trailing by six, 21-15, the Hoosiers went on a 10-4 spurt to tie the game. Jones had eight points during the flurry, including a pair of free throws to make it 25-25 with four minutes to go.

Ohio State went up by five, 32-27, with over a minute remaining, but Indiana closed out the half with six straight points. Following a Cody Zeller layup, Craft turned the ball over twice. Jones and Oladipo capitalized with a layup and slam, respectively, to give the home team a 33-32 lead at the break.

Neither team led by more than four in a very tight second half.

The Hoosiers hold a 102-77 advantage in the all-time series with the Buckeyes. Ohio State had won each of the last six meetings...Indiana was upended at Michigan State, 80-65, on Wednesday...Hulls and Oladipo had 17 and 15 points, respectively...Craft had 16 points and six turnovers, while Sullinger ended with 15 points and nine rebounds...Ohio State turned the ball over 17 times...The game featured nine ties and 11 lead changes.
