Seton Hall takes down No. 8 Connecticut
Jan 4, 2012 - 3:16 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Jordan Theodore totaled 19 points with 11 assists, as Seton Hall claimed its first victory over Connecticut in more than 10 years, a 75-63 decision over the eighth-ranked Huskies at Prudential Center.Herb Pope contributed 15 points and Fuquan Edwin added 12 with 11 rebounds for the Pirates (13-2, 2-1 Big East), who have won two straight since losing at Syracuse last week.
Seton Hall hadn't toppled UConn since March 3, 2001, a 65-63 home triumph.
Jeremy Lamb poured in 19 points and Niels Giffey had 11 with four rebounds for the Huskies (12-2, 2-1), whose seven-game win streak came to an end.
Seton Hall moved ahead for good with a 12-4 run in the late stages of the first half.
Down 16-14, Pope got the burst started with a trey, Theodore followed with a bucket and a shot from long distance, then Aaron Geramipoor ended the surge on a tip-in with 4:15 to go which gave the Pirates a 26-20 lead.
Edwin connected from beyond the arc to break double digits, and the hosts led 35-22 at the break after Pope followed up his own blocked shot with a layup at the buzzer.
Theodore's layup inside the first two minutes of the second half provided a 15-point margin, 39-24, for Seton Hall. Connecticut couldn't reduce its deficit below 10 points for the remainder of the contest.
After closing the gap to 51-39 with 10:42 to play, a quick 8-3 burst from the Pirates, ending on a Pope tip-in, put the game out of reach.
UConn needed less than four minutes after the opening tip-off to jump out to an 11-2 lead, helped along by triples from Shabazz Napier, DeAndre Daniels and Lamb.
