Temple shocks No. 5 Duke

Jan 5, 2012 - 5:00 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Khalif Wyatt scored 22 points as Temple shocked fifth-ranked Duke, 78-73, at Wells Fargo Center.

Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds while Anthony Lee had 11 points and seven boards for the Owls (10-3), who have won four straight and snapped a nine-game losing streak to Duke.

"We wanted to take away the three," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. "I thought we defended well most of the game. If you allow them the two-pointers and get beat up inside, you prevent their killer runs."

It was the fourth straight year that the Owls downed a top-10 team. They defeated eighth-ranked Tennessee in 2008, No. 3 Villanova in 2009 and No. 9 Georgetown in 2010.

Miles Plumlee scored 17 points, Mason Plumlee added 16, 13 rebounds and four assists and Austin Rivers donated 12 points for the Blue Devils (12-2), who came into the game on a five-game winning streak.

"They played with great toughness. They made big shots. They outplayed us," said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "For some reason, we didn't show up with the enthusiasm and toughness we needed. I'm disappointed in our performance."

Buckets from Lee and Wyatt to open the second half gave the Owls a six-point lead, 39-33, a minute in.

Duke kept it close over the next several minutes, but was unable to get over the hump.

After an Aaron Brown slam gave Temple a seven-point advantage, Seth Curry countered with a three-pointer for Duke and the teams exchanged baskets.

The next two minutes saw no score, but Ramone Moore and Wyatt hit consecutive threes for the Owls, who took their first double-digit lead of the game, 55-45, with 9 1/2 minutes to play.

Mason Plumlee made consecutive layups and -- following a Lee free throw -- Tyler Thornton's three-pointer cut the Blue Devils' deficit to 56-52 with 7 1/2 minutes left.

Miles Plumlee was fouled with Temple holding a four-point lead and hit one-of- two from the line, but Wyatt answered with back-to-back three-pointers to increase Temple's advantage to nine.

An Andre Dawkins turnover led to a Lee layup for a 68-57 advantage with 3:19 to play.

A Rivers layup followed by two free throws got it back to single digits and Rivers later put in two from the line to make it a six-point game at 69-63.

However, that was as close as it got. After each team put in a basket, Hollis-Jefferson converted a layup while being fouled and made the free throw for a 74-65 lead with 46.5 seconds to play to seal the win.

Duke held the early lead, but a 10-2 run from Temple saw the team grab a 14-11 advantage after a Moore jumper seven minutes in.

A Miles Plumlee tip-in gave the Blue Devils the lead back, but Hollis- Jefferson hit a jumper and followed with a layup to give the three-point lead back to the Owls.

Temple never trailed the rest of the half and led by as many as five points, but a Mason Plumlee slam for Duke in the final minute to play cut Temple's lead to 35-33 at the break.

The Owls last defeated the Blue Devils on January 25, 1996...Temple shot 56.4 percent from the floor, including 5-of-10 from three-point range...Duke made 47.5 percent of its shots and went 6-for-14 from deep...Duke still leads the all-time series, 18-10...Duke plays at Georgia Tech on Saturday...The Owls host Dayton on Saturday.
