Three-point barrage lifts No. 12 Indiana over Penn State
Jan 8, 2012 - 11:20 PM University Park, PA (Sports Network) - Jordan Hulls scored a career-high 28 points on 7-of-9 shooting from three-point range, as 12th-ranked Indiana snapped a 16-game road losing streak in Big Ten play with an 88-82 victory over Penn State. The Hoosiers (15-1, 3-1 Big Ten) entered the game leading the nation in three- point efficiency at 45.6 percent, a statistic that increased to 47.6 percent after a 16-of-24 effort Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Matt Roth drained five threes as part of a 22-point effort for Indiana, which converted only eight of its 23 field goals from inside the arc.
"I would say that Indiana is a great team and if they get open, they can make shots," said Penn State's Tim Frazier. "We had a lot of drive-bys where we had to drop down and help, and that left them open."
Cody Zeller and Christian Watford scored 10 points apiece in the Hoosiers' first road triumph in league play since their last visit to State College on January 21, 2010.
Frazier posted 21 points and seven assists for the Nittany Lions (9-8, 1-3), who got 20 points from Jermaine Marshall.
Roth knocked down a trey to make it 76-65, matching Indiana's largest lead of the game, with about 4 1/2 minutes to play. Penn State responded with a 13-4 run, which Marshall ended by hitting a layup after a turnover by Hulls to close the gap to 80-78 with 35 seconds remaining.
But the Hoosiers prevailed in the tough test after Hulls and Roth both went 4- for-4 from the foul line.
"They're going to beat teams," Indiana head coach Tom Cream said of Penn State. "There's no question about it."
Down by as many as seven early in the first half, Penn State tied the game 22-22 on a Marshall jumper. Indiana followed with a 15-4 surge and led 37-26 on Tom Pritchard's putback of a Victor Oladipo miss. The advantage was whittled down to two before three Roth free throws put the visitors up 42-37 at halftime.
