Big Least: Pitt suffers 6th straight loss, falls to No. 25 Marquette
Jan 15, 2012 - 1:13 AM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Darius Johnson-Odom had 18 points, Jae Crowder scored 15 and 25th-ranked Marquette extended Pittsburgh's woes with a 62-57 victory at the Bradley Center.Todd Mayo contributed nine points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles (14-4, 3-2 Big East), who trailed by as many as nine points in the opening half.
Ashton Gibbs paced the Panthers (11-7, 0-5) with a career-high 29 points. Currently the only team without a victory in league play, Pittsburgh has lost six in a row for the first time since January 22-February 5, 1998.
A Mayo deuce gave Marquette its first lead of the game at 42-41 near the midway point of the second half. The advantage reached 49-41 when Jamil Wilson capped a 13-0 surge with a pair of free throws.
Down nine after Johnson-Odom drained a three-pointer with under two minutes left, Pittsburgh closed to within 60-57 when Gibbs knocked down a trey from the corner with a defender challenging the shot and 54 seconds to play.
Crowder missed from the long range at the other end of the floor, but Davante Gardner was fouled after grabbing the offensive rebound. His two free throws snapped the Golden Eagles' four-game losing streak in the series.
"I thought in the second half we were really good in a lot of ways," said Marquette head coach Buzz Williams.
The Panthers raced out to a 14-5 lead before Marquette narrowed the gap to two at 24-22. J.J. Moore made two free throws to put the visitors up 29-24 at the break.
"We rebounded well, but not nearly as well in the second half," Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon said. "That caught up to us. Obviously, a couple of turnovers caught up to us as well."
Game Notes
Gibbs (261) passed Jason Matthews (1987-91) to become Pitt's all-time three- point shooter...Nasir Robinson posted 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals but also committed seven of the Panthers' 17 turnovers...Pitt last began Big East play 0-5 during the 1999-2000 season.
