Pangos comes through in clutch for Gonzaga

Jan 15, 2012 - 4:15 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Kevin Pangos made up for a tough shooting night by hitting crucial free throws down the stretch, as No. 21 Gonzaga eked by Loyola Marymount, 62-58.

Pangos shot just 1-for-6 from the floor but was 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final 4 1/2 minutes, helping the Bulldogs (14-3, 4-1 WCC) bounce back from their 21-point loss at Saint Mary's on Thursday.

"It was a great bounce-back win. It was really important for us," Gonzaga head coach Mark Few said.

Elias Harris and Gary Bell totaled 19 and 16 points, respectively, in the win, while Ashley Hamilton led Loyola Marymount (10-8, 3-2) with 16 points.

The Lions held a slim 34-32 lead after an evenly-played first half, but they went the first seven-plus minutes of the second half without a field goal.

Gonzaga went on 15-2 run during the drought, but Loyola Marymount scored eight of nine points midway through the half to pull within 50-46 on Anthony Ireland's three-pointer.

A Hamilton free throw cut the deficit to 54-53 a little later, but Ireland committed turnovers the next two times down the floor.

Pangos' four free throws were answered by two Drew Viney freebies and a Hamilton dunk with two minutes left.

Viney missed a layup on the Lions' next possession, and Harris beat the shot clock with an up-and-under layup off a nice feed from Pangos with seven seconds remaining.

Ireland was quickly fouled and made his first free throw before missing the second. Pangos grabbed the rebound and sank the clinching free throws, snapping Loyola Marymount's two-game winning streak.

Game Notes

Gonzaga has won the last four meetings...Robert Sacre scored eight points for the Bulldogs, who shot just 2-for-13 from three-point range...LaRon Armstead and Ireland finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively, in defeat.
