Douglass, No. 20 Michigan edge No. 9 Michigan State

Jan 18, 2012 - 4:20 AM Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - Stu Douglass scored the go-ahead layup in the final minute Tuesday and No. 20 Michigan locked down on defense to survive a last-second shot, beating No. 9 Michigan State for the third straight time, 60-59.

It was the first time the in-state rivals met as ranked teams in almost 14 years and Michigan's Crisler Center crowd got to see a thriller, particularly the frantic final moments.

Trey Burke, who scored a game-high 20 points, led the break that ended in Douglass' go-ahead bucket from the right side with 36.5 seconds remaining.

"I had missed my last three shots," Douglass said of his game-winner, "so I was making sure not even to hit the rim -- no question at all."

At the other end, Jordan Morgan blocked Keith Appling in the lane but Michigan State got its own rebound. Draymond Green then drove for an off-balance jumper that clanked off the left side of the rim and a scramble for the ball in the last second ended without a shot.

The Wolverines (15-4, 5-2 Big Ten) bounced back from a loss at Iowa on Saturday to win for the third time in four games. They got 10 points apiece from Zack Novak and Tim Hardaway Jr. and moved to 12-0 at Crisler this season.

"I don't know if anyone in the house didn't think that was a great basketball game," said Michigan coach John Beilein. "So many great plays, so many players stepping up."

Michigan State "is a great basketball team," Beilein said, but the Spartans have suddenly lost back-to-back games for the second time this season.

The Spartans (15-4, 4-2) had a 15-game winning streak snapped by Northwestern on Saturday -- their first loss since dropping games to North Carolina and Duke to open the season -- but Green said this one hurt more than the others.

"You never want to lose to Michigan," he said. "It definitely hurts. It's a sting like no other."

Derrick Nix led Michigan State with 13 points and Keith Appling had 10.

On a key possession in the final minutes, Appling dribbled off his foot for a backcourt violation to turn the ball over.

The Spartans withstood the mistake at first when Burke missed a three-pointer. But Appling also missed a three, then another shot after Brandon Wood grabbed the offensive rebound.

Burke led the ensuing fastbreak, dribbling deep into the lane before flipping the ball to Douglass to make it 60-59.

The Wolverines won despite giving up an 11-point lead in the last 12 minutes.

They led 36-29 at halftime and stretched it to 47-36 on Burke's three-pointer with 12:18 remaining. Michigan State responded with an 8-0 run and later took a 50-49 lead on Brandan Kearney's three inside seven minutes, touching off a the competitive final minutes.

The last time they met as ranked teams was February 17, 1998...Michigan shot 51.1 percent and Michigan State 48 percent...The teams will meet again at Michigan State on February 5.
