No. 7 Kansas edges Texas
Jan 22, 2012 - 2:45 AM Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Tyshawn Taylor had 22 points, Thomas Robinson scored 17 and seventh-ranked Kansas outlasted Texas, 69-66, at the Frank Erwin Center.Jeff Withey netted 12 points as the Jayhawks (16-3, 6-0 Big 12) picked up their ninth straight win.
"I think it teaches them to play each possession, rebound and take care of the ball," Kansas coach Bill Self said of the tight win. "I think our first seven baskets, we had six assists, and then we got four assists the rest of the game. The other team was driving the ball, but we only turned it over six times in a row with a team that has a history of not taking care of the ball well. Even though we did not play great, I think we played well enough in some areas that gave us a chance to win. This is the best win we have had all year."
J'Covan Brown finished with a game-high 24 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Longhorns (12-7, 2-4), who suffered their first loss in 12 home games this season. Texas has lost three straight overall.
Withey gathered a deflected pass and was fouled on a layup. He made the free throw with 37 seconds left and his three-point play put Kansas up 68-66. Brown missed a jumper at the other end of the floor, and Robinson sank 1-of-2 free throws.
The Longhorns had another opportunity to tie the game, but Brown, who knocked down three treys, couldn't get his eighth three-point attempt to fall.
"I think at the end of the game, they (Kansas) executed. There was no doubt that they were going to go through Robinson, and they were driving the ball and getting it to the glass," Texas coach Rick Barnes said. "There were a couple of costly turnovers earlier in the game. We threw the ball away in transition, and some of our shot selections were not great."
Kansas raced out to a 22-7 lead and were up 39-27 at halftime. Texas erased another 15-point deficit in the second half to create a back-and-forth finish.
The Jayhawks shot 61 percent in the first half compared to just 33 percent over the final 20 minutes.
