Virginia Tech takes down No. 15 Virginia
Jan 23, 2012 - 4:46 AM Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Erick Green scored 15 points, helping Virginia Tech pull out a 47-45 victory over No. 15 Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena.Dorenzo Hudson totaled 12 points, including a three-pointer in the closing moments that made it a two-possession contest and helped the Hokies (12-7, 1-4 ACC) pick up their first conference victory.
Virginia Tech had lost to Wake Forest, Florida State, Boston College and North Carolina to open its ACC schedule.
"We took a step forward in terms of playing through adversity," said Hokies head coach Seth Greenberg.
Mike Scott, Jontel Evans and Joe Harris all had 10 points for the Cavaliers (15-3, 2-2), who were coming off Thursday's victory at Georgia Tech.
"We struggled to shoot the ball. We struggled from the three. We even missed some layups," said Virginia coach Tony Bennett.
"I told our guys, what else can you do but take those shots? They showed tremendous heart trying to get back into the game. Even with all of that cold shooting there were still opportunities for them to win this game."
Hudson and C.J. Barksdale connected on back-to-back jumpers at the end of a close first half, giving the Hokies a 23-19 lead at the break. Green then drained a three to open the second half, but Virginia battled to go back in front later in the period.
Evans made 1-of-2 from the line near the midway point to close an 8-0 run and give the Cavaliers a 33-32 edge.
It was back-and-forth down the stretch, but Virginia Tech put together a key run. Five consecutive points, capped by a jumper by Hudson, gave the Hokies a 44-41 edge with just more than a minute to play.
Evans followed with a jumper, but after two timeouts, Hudson canned his three- pointer with under half a minute to go for a 47-43 lead. Virginia followed with a layup by Harris, then got the ball back after the Hokies' Robert Brown missed a foul shot. However, Harris turned the ball over to end the game.
Game Notes
Virginia Tech made 45.2 percent of its shots, but attempted only seven free throws (making four)...Virginia made 14-of-22 from the line, and shot 32.6 percent. The Cavaliers missed 13 of their 14 three-point tries.
