Baylor holds off Texas

Jan 28, 2012 - 10:55 PM Waco, TX (Sports Network) - Perry Jones III scored 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as No. 6 Baylor held off a late push by Texas to take a 76-71 victory at Ferrell Center.

Quincy Miller added 18 points and Brady Heslip had 11 for the Bears (19-2, 6-2 Big 12), who earned their second straight win.

J'Covan Brown netted 32 points for Texas (13-8, 3-5), but it was not enough for the Longhorns to avoid their fourth loss in five games.

"I think we need consistency with everybody on the team and we need guys who we know what we're going to get every single night, and we still don't have that," said Texas head coach Rick Barnes. "We have a couple guys who are doing it, it won't show up on the statistics, but they're really trying to do the things that we want done. But we have to have everybody."

After Heslip opened the second half with a layup to give Baylor a 40-29 lead, Texas battled back with a 9-4 swing to get within 43-38, highlighted by consecutive three-pointers by Brown around a Jones jumper.

Heslip's three-point play stopped the run and sparked a 9-2 spurt by the Bears that gave them their largest lead of the game, 52-40.

But Texas scored 14 of the next 16 points to knot the game at 54 with under nine minutes to go on Brown's three-pointer.

Baylor then stretched its lead to 64-58 with 5 1/2 minutes left as it made just one basket -- a Heslip three-pointer -- but converted on 7-of-8 free throws.

Texas responded with five straight points to get within one and had a chance to tie the game at 64 when Myck Kabongo was fouled on a shot from beyond the arc for a potential four-point play, but he missed his foul shot.

Brown later dropped in a trey to knot the game at 66 points apiece with under three minutes left. However, Pierre Jackson quickly responded with a three to put Baylor on top for good.

Texas did threaten in the final minute, though, when a pair of Clint Chapman foul shots was followed by a Jackson turnover, leading to Kabongo making 1- of-2 free throws to get Texas within 73-71 with 26 seconds left.

Heslip was then fouled and made the front end of two free throws for a three- point lead, but Brown had his game-tying three-pointer rim out at the other end and Jones made both free throws to seal the win for Baylor.

"I think first of all, if you look at Texas and anytime you have a rivalry game, it's not over until it's over," Baylor head coach Scott Drew said about the end of the game. "J'Covan (Brown) was special and we didn't have an answer for him and then we made some unfortunate plays. But as a coach it's a lot easier to teach after a win than it is a loss, so I'd much rather teach now."

After a Jonathan Holmes' jumper put Texas ahead 19-18 to cap a back-and-forth opening nine minutes of the first half, Baylor reeled off an 11-2 run to take a 29-21 lead.

Texas scored its two points on a pair of Sheldon McClellan free throws and was held without a basket for almost five minutes until Brown's three-point play closed the gap to 29-24 with 4:40 to play in the half.

The Bears, though, outscored the Longhorns 9-5 for the rest of the first and took a 38-29 advantage into the break. Texas' final seven points of the half were all scored by Brown.

Game Notes

Texas shot 1-for-11 from three-point range in the first half, but made 6-of-12 three-pointers in the second half. Baylor hit 3-of-5 three-pointers in the first half but struggled to a 2-for-10 mark in the second...The Bears improved to 19-3 all-time when ranked in the top 10...Texas holds a 157-80 advantage in the all-time series.
