No. 13 Baylor outlasts Texas

Feb 21, 2012 - 5:56 AM Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Quincy Acy carried No. 13 Baylor to a comeback win, a hard-fought 77-72 victory over in-state rival Texas sealed by Pierre Jackson's clinching free throws in the final minute.

Acy made up for poor shooting performances by Jackson and Perry Jones III by totaling 22 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Jackson wound up with 25 points behind a 12-for-12 effort at the foul line for Baylor (23-5, 10-5 Big 12), which had lost three of four coming in.

"We had a tough home loss against [Kansas State], and we really wanted to dig deep and not give up. (Just) because we lost a few games, that does not mean the season is over," Acy said.

Jackson and Jones went a combined 8-of-28 (29 percent) from the floor, but the Bears shot 50 percent from the field and 6-of-9 from three-point range in the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit at halftime.

"The difference in the game was our defense," Texas head coach Rick Barnes said. "We were terrific defensively and then we weren't there in the second half."

J'Covan Brown made six three-pointers en route to an 18-point effort to lead Texas (17-11, 7-8). The Longhorns were trying to add a signature win to their flimsy NCAA Tournament resume, but dropped their second straight on the heels of a four-game win streak.

Baylor had more turnovers (nine) than field goals (seven) in the first 20 minutes, but got a spark from Brady Heslip, who hit a trio of three-pointers over the first five-plus minutes of the second half.

Jones' jumper with seven minutes left capped a 13-4 run that gave Baylor its first lead, 56-55, in over 21 minutes.

It was back-and-forth coming down the stretch, and Acy flicked in a shot down low to break a 65-65 tie, then converted a three-point play with 2:43 to play.

Baylor turned it over the next two times down, and a Myck Kabongo bucket brought Texas within three. Acy was fouled with 60 seconds remaining and hit 1-of-2 before Jonathan Holmes cut the deficit to one by draining a three- pointer from the left corner.

With time winding down on the shot clock, Kabongo fouled Jackson with 28.6 seconds showing. The ensuing two free throws, followed by A.J. Walton's steal of Brown's ill-advised cross-court pass, sealed Baylor's season sweep.

The Bears scored the game's first seven points, but Texas answered with the next 11, capped by Clint Chapman's steal and dunk less than six minutes in.

The Longhorns played front-runner the rest of the first half by holding the Bears to one field goal over the final nine minutes, and Brown's third three- pointer yielded a 36-26 cushion at halftime.

Heslip scored 12 points while Jones netted 10 on 3-of-14 shooting...Kabongo logged 12 points for the Longhorns, who got 13 points from Sheldon McClellan...Baylor upended Texas, 76-71, on January 28 and swept Texas A&M and Texas in the same season for the first time since 1970-71...Texas fell to 14-3 at home and 12-2 against the Bears in Austin during the Rick Barnes era...The Longhorns still lead the all-time series, 157-81. It is the most-played rivalry for both schools.
