Seton Hall upends No. 9 Hoyas

Feb 22, 2012 - 6:07 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Jordan Theodore scored a career-high 29 points on Tuesday, leading Seton Hall to a 73-55 toppling of No. 9 Georgetown.

Herb Pope added 12 points, while Brandon Mobley and Fuquan Edwin both had 10 for the Pirates (19-9, 8-8 Big East), who won for the fourth time in five games.

The Hoyas (20-6, 10-5) shot just 40.4 percent and were paced by Greg Whittington's nine points. They were coming off of Saturday's win at Providence.

"Theodore played one of the best games that I've seen him play all year," said Georgetown coach John Thompson III. "To tell you the truth he didn't make any mistakes and I'm not just talking about the shots he made. He totally controlled everything, and tonight we just didn't have any answers for him."

The Pirates led 35-28 at the half and hit their first four shots out of the locker room, extending their advantage to 45-33 in the process.

The lead was still 12 when Pope scored consecutive buckets in close and Edwin made a pair of free throws to stretch the margin to 58-40 with eight minutes to play.

Theodore kept the Hoyas at bay down the stretch. He followed a Jabril Trawick three-point play with a corner trey, then knocked down a pair of free throws after a Mikael Hopkins tip in with just over three minutes left.

Edwin's layup on the Pirates' next possession made it 67-47 and the lead didn't dip below 18 the rest of the way.

"Watching them on film, that is one of the best defensive teams in the country, by far," said Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard. "To play the way we played and execute the way we did was really good."

The game had been tied at 22 with five minutes left in the first half, but Seton Hall closed with a 13-6 run to claim its seven-point halftime advantage.

Edwin started the burst with a three-pointer and Theodore, who had 12 first- half points, capped it with a pair of free throws after penetrating the lane and drawing a foul with 1.3 seconds to play.

"We have had pretty good perimeter defense but we were atrocious today," said Thompson. "They hit a couple shots early and our frustrations set in and carried over. That's something that we haven't done, nor haven't shown but we will fix that."

Theodore entered Tuesday averaging a team-high 15.7 points per game...Georgetown leading scorer Jason Clark (14.8 ppg) had seven points on 2- of-4 shooting...The Hoyas lead the all-time series, 53-41. They had won the last two meetings.
