Green and Colorado State get past New Mexico

Feb 22, 2012 - 6:30 AM Fort Collins, CO (Sports Network) - Dorian Green scored 17 points and Pierce Hornung finished with a double-double, as Colorado State knocked off No. 18 New Mexico, 71-63, at Moby Arena.

Hornung logged 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Wes Eikmeier added 11 points in Colorado State's second straight win.

The Rams (17-9, 6-5 MWC) improved to 13-1 at home and have an opportunity to make a case for NCAA Tournament consideration with matchups against nationally-ranked San Diego State and UNLV on the horizon.

New Mexico (22-5, 8-3) had won seven in a row to climb into the rankings for the first time since the end of the 2009-10 season, but a 37-percent shooting effort did in the Lobos on Tuesday.

Kendall Williams had a team-high 16 points, but shot just 3-of-13 from the field in defeat.

Colorado State, which lost by 33 in New Mexico on January 25, extended a two- point lead late in the contest by scoring on three straight touches, with Hornung's bucket resulting in a 60-52 lead with 3 1/2 minutes to play.

Drew Gordon converted a three-point play to keep New Mexico within two possessions, and it was still a five-point difference entering the final minute.

New Mexico's Jamal Fenton missed a rushed three-point try, and Green finished off a left-handed layup with 39 seconds on the clock.

A Williams three-pointer cut into the deficit, but the Rams made enough free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

A tight first half ended with Colorado State clinging to a 30-29 lead, and a 9-0 run by the Rams early in the second half was answered by six straight New Mexico points to keep it close.
