No. 24 Virginia downs Maryland in OT

Mar 4, 2012 - 11:52 PM College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Mike Scott scored 35 points, including six in overtime, and No. 24 Virginia held off a late second half comeback to defeat Maryland, 75-72, on Sunday.

Scott had a double-double as he added 11 rebounds and Sammy Zeglinski poured in 20 points for the Cavaliers (22-8, 9-7 ACC), who clinched the fourth seed and a first-round bye in the ACC Tournament, which begins Thursday in Atlanta.

"I am really proud of Mike [Scott] and Sammy [Zeglinski], I thought they were really resilient and made big plays when we needed it," said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett. "I thought our guys were a little dejected heading into overtime, but we battled."

Terrell Stoglin paced the Terrapins (16-14, 6-10) with 25 points and Sean Mosley contributed 17 points and 10 boards. Maryland will be the eighth seed in the ACC tourney.

Jontel Evans opened the scoring in extra time with a layup off Faust's turnover, and Scott made one of two free-throws for a three-point UVA lead.

Faust netted two from the charity stripe, but Virginia responded with the next five, as Sammy Zeglinski made 1-of-2 from the line and Scott draining jumpers on consecutive possessions.

Maryland cut its deficit to two with under a minute to play after a Faust three-throw and a Stoglin trey, but Evan's layup in the paint put the game out of reach with 19 ticks on the clock.

Overtime was only necessary because of a furious Maryland run in the final eight minutes of the second half.

Down 53-41, James Padgett began the rally with a layup. Faust and Stoglin followed with treys on consecutive possessions to make it 53-49.

Field goals by Scott and Harris brought UVA's lead back to eight, but the Terrapins rolled off the next six.

A bit later, after an apparent three-pointer by Zeglinski--later ruled to be a two--with 14 seconds remaing put the Cavaliers up 61-58, Stoglin answered immediately with a trey for the first and only tie of the second half.

Both teams missed shots before the buzzer sounded, and they headed for the overtime period.

"I was really proud of our effort. We talked about three things at halftime and we weren't doing any of them at that point," said Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. "We talked about playing smarter, which I thought we did. We talked about playing harder and playing together, this is it, this is our team and we have to play together. After the game I told them that I was proud of them and we just came up short."

Virginia led 31-22 at halftime.

Three of UVA's eight dressed players fouled out; Akil Mitchell with 1:29 to play in the fourth, Darion Atkins at the 1:33 mark of overtime, and Harris with 5.3 seconds remaining in OT...Mitchell finished with seven points...Maryland shot 50 percent (13-of-26) in the second half, including 4- of-8 from beyond the arc...The Terrapins converted 14-of-26 free-throw attempts.
